About Lake Calhoun Sailing School

The Lake Calhoun Sailing School is a non-profit community sailing school. LCSS was founded in 1989 by parents from the Calhoun Yacht Club who wanted a formal program to teach sailing to their children, and to introduce the sport to others from the area. LCSS has grown to one of the largest sailing schools in the U.S. with enrollment of more than 800 sailors last summer. The goals of LCSS are:

  • To teach the skills of sailing, a sport to enjoy for a lifetime.
  • To instill self-reliance, confidence and cooperation in students.
  • To ensure that students have fun - an aspect of learning that is very important to children.

By the end of a two-week session, beginning students can rig, launch and handle a boat in a variety of conditions.

LCSS employs quality instructors and proven teaching techniques. Most of our instructors have extensive racing experience. All staff members receive CPR and Red Cross certification.

A volunteer Board of Directors, most of whom are sailors themselves, oversees all classes and the curriculum. The school keeps its costs as low as possible, and operates only with the help of charitable donations. If you need scholarship assistance, please contact the Director, Larry Salzman.

The Sailing School is affiliated with the 109-year-old Calhoun Yacht Club. Our hope is that all of the children and adults who learn sailing on our lake will one day be active members of the Yacht Club. We would like you to be aware of the possibilities of expanding your child’s or your involvement in sailing. Typically, the entry-level youth boats are the Optimist, the Laser, or the 420 and many used boats are available for reasonable prices. For adults, many affordable used boats are available as well. If you wish further information, contact Chris Boylan at 651-665-0035 or Larry Salzman at 612-927-8552.
