Policies and Recommendations

LIFE JACKETS AND SAFETY All students are required to provide their own U.S. Coast Guard approved type III life jackets (PFD) that fit properly. Types with buckles or zippers are preferred.
A PFD must be worn while on the dock or aboard any sailboat or powerboat during school hours.
CLOTHING
  • A bag with extra clothing, a swimsuit and raingear is recommended.
  • Jacket and long pants on cool days - It's always cooler at the lake.
  • Aqua socks, Velcro-fastened footwear (Teva sandles) or sneakers that can get wet are advised.
  • No leather soled shoes, flip-flops or loose sandals.
SWIMMING SKILLS All students must be able to swim without a life jacket. On the first day of class, children are given a water orientation check: They will have to tread water for one minute and swim 50 feet while wearing their life jackets.
SUN PROTECTION Apply waterproof sunscreen - at least SPF 15 - at home before coming to the lake. Carry a tube to the lake as well.
Each student should have a water bottle, and should drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration on hot days.
FOOD For students attending full-day classes, there will be a lunch break. Food is available for purchase in the neighborhood. The school has secure storage space for backpacks and sack lunches.
BAD WEATHER Every effort will be made to sail whenever weather permits. If inclement weather is forecast, the class may be cancelled or the starting time postponed. If feasible, a makeup class will be scheduled for Friday. Class delay or postponement information will be available on the school hotline (612-822-8328) by 8:00 AM on the day of the class.
BICYCLES If your child rides a bicycle to the lake, he or she should bring a heavy duty lock and chain or cable and make sure the bike is locked securely.
BEHAVIOR While sailing is an exciting sport, students are expected to follow certain rules that promote the safety of all. Parents will be notified of persistent problems with their child’s behavior. Those students who continue to be disruptive may be asked to leave.
PAYMENT Students are not considered registered until a completed registration form and full tuition fees have been received. Some scholarship funds are available based on need. If you wish to make payment arrangements, please call Larry Salzman (612-927-8552). Space in classes is on a first-come basis.
REFUNDS If you need to withdraw from a class, a full refund will be made until two weeks before the start of the class; a 50% refund until one week before the class; no refund after that time. If you are able to find a replacement to enroll in the class, the school will make a full refund.
